Music
General Music
Students receive weekly music instruction by a credentialed teacher, Mrs. Suzanne McElderry, who has been here at Hopkinson for 6 years. Performances during the school year demonstrate achievement in vocal music and dance. Students are provided with opportunities to study various styles and types of music and to play several instruments. Third grade participates in a musical keyboard unit and 4th and 5th grade specialize in the Recorder.
Chorus
Fourth and fifth grade students have the opportunity to join the Hopkinson chorus and showcase their musical and dance creativity in through the annual chorus play. This year's extravaganza is Charlie Brown's Big Adventure. Students also participate in the All District Choral Festival.
Hopkinson is a Class Act School
The Frieda Belinfante Class Act Partnership is Pacific Symphony's flagship youth education program. Hopkinson is privileged to partner with Pacific Symphony as we journey to music composed by classic artist varying every year! This year our resident musician is flutist Cindy Ellis. Cindy will inspire and captivate the students as they learn about the composer through the Prelude Assembly, individual classroom lessons, family concert night, and interactive musical experiences. At the end of the year, the 1st-5th graders will have the opportunity to attend a concert at the Segerstrom Hall.
As part of the Class Act school, Pacific Symphony offers 50% off tickets to many of their concerts. Family Musical Morning Concerts are fun and fascinating 45-minute concerts designed especially for kids 5-11. Enjoy family fun time together while enhancing your child's (or grandchild's) love of music. Plus, interactive fun at the Musical Carnival, 9 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. is part of the experience!
Instrumental Music - Parent Paid
Los Alamitos Youth Center offers beginning to advanced after school instrumental classes for students in grades K-5 at Hopkinson. Classes are held one hour weekly using highly qualified music instructors. Students demonstrate their musical talents via an evening orchestra or band concert and celebrate the end of the year with an after school parent concert.
