Information About Transitional Kindergarten (TK)

Los Alamitos Unified School District wants every child to be prepared for success in school. To ensure that kindergarten children are fully able to achieve success in the increasingly rigorous, State-standards-based curriculum, we are offering Transitional Kindergarten (TK) in addition to our regular kindergarten. Transitional Kindergarten is the first year of a two year kindergarten program that uses a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate. TK builds a bridge between early learning and regular kindergarten. It is designed for students who who do not meet the State's eligible date to enter kindergarten and for students who are not developmentally ready to succeed in school and/or for parents who believe their child is not ready, socially or academically, for regular kindergarten even though their child is age-eligible. For the 2021-2022 school year, TK is available to children who turn five between September 2 and December 2, 2021. Kindergarten age students can enroll in TK based upon space availability.
TK is a modified kindergarten preparation program. It will introduce many of the skills needed for success to our younger students who will enter kindergarten the following year. In TK, teachers help children develop skills through activities that build confidence and communication. They also expose children to reading and math in exciting, interactive ways by using educational games to teach children about words and sentences and help them understand mathematical concepts like counting and patterns.

Using the State curriculum standards for kindergarten, teachers will use appropriate instructional strategies and will teach at a pace to meet students' individual needs. If appropriate, students will be able to transition to a regular kindergarten class during the year, depending on space availability in the regular kindergarten classroom provided they met the state age eligibility requirement. At the end of the year, students will be individually placed in either regular kindergarten or in first grade, depending on their readiness and in accordance with Board Policy, Board Regulations and the state age requirement. All transitional kindergarten students who turn five between September 2 and December 2 must enroll in regular kindergarten the following school year.

TK classes will follow the same calendar and bell schedule as regular kindergarten classes.  TK classes will also be limited to the same class size reduction as regular kindergarten. The number of TK classes and locations will be determined by parent interest and student enrollment.
